Course Description
Participants will learn why robust cable joints and terminations are critical for dependable electrical connection, mechanical support and network integrity. Emphasis will be on MV-rated XLPE and paper-insulated lead-covered (PILC) cables, covering their theory, construction, preparation, jointing and termination . You’ll engage with manufacturer-specific specifications, stress-control principles and quality assurance protocols to ensure every joint and termination meets performance and safety standards .
Target Market
This course is tailored for:
- Cable Jointers, Electricians and Technicians responsible for MV cable installations
- Electrical Engineers and Supervisors seeking deeper understanding of cable accessory applications
- Maintenance Managers and Asset Reliability Professionals aiming to minimise network downtime
- Contractors and Consultants involved in designing or specifying cable joints and terminations
Course Objectives
By the end of the course, delegates will be able to:
- Explain MV cable construction and insulation principles for both XLPE and PILC types
- Interpret and apply manufacturer’s specifications and industry standards to cable jointing and terminating
- Prepare and strip cables correctly, including semiconductor removal and conductor shaping
- Install stress-control, sealing and insulation materials using heat-shrink and cold-shrink techniques
- Execute straight, branch and transition joints on single-core and three-core cables with precision
- Perform terminations into switchgear and outdoor fittings using mechanical connectors and sealing tubes
- Use specialized tools (e.g., spiking guns, crimpers, cable strippers) and employ “tricks of the trade” for efficient workflows
- Conduct MV insulation resistance and continuity tests, plus post-jointing inspections to verify joint integrity
Day 1 – Theory and Fundamentals
- Introduction to MV Power Cables: overview of cable types, applications and network roles
- XLPE vs. PILC Construction: material properties, moisture ingress issues and ageing mechanisms
- Industry Standards & Specifications: IEC 60502, IEEE Std Std 48 and manufacturers’ datasheets
- Safety & Documentation: OHS regulations, risk assessment and work permits
- Cable Identification & Testing Principles: core identification, spiking theory and pre-installation checks
- Stress Control & Insulation Breakdown: theory behind tracking, erosion and stress relief
- Review of Industry Manuals: guided look at UK Power Networks LV Jointing Manual procedures for best practices
Day 2 – Practical Application & Theoretical Assessment
- Theoretical Assessment: short written test covering Day 1 content
- Cable Preparation Workshop: hands-on stripping of XLPE and PILC cables, semiconductor removal and conductor shaping
- Material Application: applying bonding media, mastic, stress-control tubes and pre-moulded components
- XLPE Jointing Techniques: heat-shrink and cold-shrink methods for single-core and triplex cables
- PILC Jointing Techniques: lead extrusion, poured insulation and resin filling methods
- Specialized Tools Demo: spiking guns, crimpers, hydraulic presses and thickness gauges
Day 3 – Advanced Practical & Certification Assessment
- Termination Practices: mechanical connector installation into switchgear and outdoor interfaces
- Live Jointing Simulation: end-to-end jointing sequence under timed conditions
- MV Testing & Verification: insulation resistance, continuity and partial discharge checks
- Troubleshooting & Quality Control: identifying joint failures, moisture paths and repair strategies
- Practical Assessment: delegates complete a full joint and termination to Peganix quality criteria
- Course Review & Feedback: group debrief, lessons learned and Q&A
CERTIFICATION
Successful participants will receive Peganix’s Certificate of Completion.
Successful participants will receive Peganix’s Certificate of Completion plus a Certificate of Accreditation, recognising their mastery of XLPE and PILC jointing and terminating techniques .
This course is offered in-person at Peganix training centres or live-online, with interactive chat, audio/video engagement and recorded sessions for later review .
